Community Capacity

Community Capacity Building; these are current buzz words but what do they mean? Here’s a definition Learning Connections at Communities Scotland are currently working on:

“Development work that strengthens the ability of community organisations and groups to build their structures, systems, people and skills so that they are better able to define and achieve their objectives and engage in consultation and planning, manage community projects and take part in partnership and community enterprises.

It includes aspects of training, organisational and personal development and resource building, organised and planned in a self-conscious manner.”

If you’re a member of a community group you might recognise this as what you do.

Perth & Kinross Council has seven Capacity Building Workers within Education and Children’s Services.  It is their job to support individuals, community groups and organisations to identify and tackle issues which affect the quality of life in their communities. They do this in a number of ways:  finding funding, others who might help, offering training, advice and guidance on the way forward.

Highland Perthshire’s Capacity Builder is Helen Flatley, based at the Birnam Institute.  She can be contacted on 01350 727669 or by email at hflatley@dunkeld-pkc.org.uk
or you can drop in and see her at the Birnam Institute, Station Road, Birnam, Dunkeld.
